Among all types of synthetic yarns, the polyester filament yarn is one of the most popular. Polyester filament yarn is commonly used in textiles, such as knitting, embroidery, and sewing. In addition, polyester filament is used in home furnishings and in medical applications. It is also used in the construction of carpets.

The polyester filament yarn is essentially composed of a core and a plurality of fins. The core may be either rectangular or multilobal. The fins may be hollow or polygonal. These fins extend radially from the core. These fins are separated from the core by treatment with an aqueous alkali solution. The alkali treatment preferably removes ten to forty percent of the weight of the filament. This is achieved by treating the filament with a solution containing between ten and 100 g/l of alkali.

The degree of separation of the fins from the core is measured in several ways. First, a cross-sectional photograph is taken of the filament. The filament is then treated with an aqueous alkali solutions for a period of one or more minutes or hours. This is ideally conducted at a temperature between forty-two degrees and one hundred degrees Celsius.

The alkali treatment also helps in minimizing the formation of free protruding fiber ends. When the fins are separated from the core, these fins have a slender rectangular cross-section. A photograph is taken of the treated filament to count the number of fins. It should also be noted that the ratio of the WB to the DA should be at least one-eighth. The fins should not break or be damaged.

The filament yarn of present invention has an intrinsic viscosity of between 0.5 and 1.1. The viscosity of polyester used in the filament yarn of present invention is not particularly limited. It is preferred that the filament yarn of present invention is composed of at least 85% by mole of ethylene terephthalate units.

The alkali treatment process for polyester filament yarn is similar to the conventional treatment. The polyester filament yarn is treated with an aqueous alkali treatment solution. A solution containing between ten and hundred g/l of alkali is heated to between forty-two degrees and one hundred degrees C. This is typically performed for two minutes to two hours. The aqueous alkali solution penetrates the surface portion of the fabric first.

After treatment, the filament yarn is then woven into fabric. The surface portion of the fabric has a soft touch, good bulkiness, and a uniform appearance. The fabric also exhibits a good draping property. The fabric may be marketed as a substitute for cotton yarn.
